When do I need treatment from an osteopath or cranial osteopath?

Pain is the body's way of telling you something is wrong so don't ignore it.

You should seek treatment if you:

bullet point Have a joint or muscle pain which is showing no sign of improvement after three days

bullet point Have a joint or muscle pain that comes and goes; there is an unresolved underlying cause which needs addressing

bullet point Have a joint or muscle pain which is worsening

bullet point You have a joint or muscle pain which won't go away

bullet point Have had a sporting injury or accident. Seek treatment as soon as possible after the event

bullet point Sit for long periods of time in a car or at a desk. You will benefit from a check-up to keep your spine healthy and help prevent problems such as RSI developing

bullet point Have arthritis or a painful old injury. Treatment will help maintain optimum function and keep pain to a minimum

Everybody benefits from an annual check-up to prevent niggles developing into painful problems.

To arrange an appointment or to discuss your needs telephone me on 020 8847 5888.

What happens at an appointment with Gillian Craigie?

Your first appointment will take an hour.
I will take a detailed case history from you and carry out an osteopathic examination of your posture, joint mobility and muscle tension to establish the nature and exact cause of your problem. I then draw up a treatment programme, specific to your needs, and carry out your first treatment which will include self help advice to speed up your recovery and prevent recurrence of your problem.

Subsequent appointments take 30 minutes.
After discussing changes in your symptoms with you, I will examine, treat and advise you.

The osteopathic examination.
I will ask you to perform simple movements when standing and sitting to help me understand and assess your condition. On the treatment couch I will carry out further examination and observations and may also take your blood pressure and test reflexes, joint mobility and muscle strength. Once I have made a diagnosis I will discuss it with you and commence treatment.

Treatment.
My treatments centre on osteopathy and cranial osteopathy and are enhanced with techniques from naturopathy, ergonomics and therapeutic exercise. From these, I carefully select the most appropriate techniques to create a treatment programme specific to your body's needs. These include:

bullet point Massaging and stretching muscles

bullet point Articulating joints using gentle rocking movements

bullet point Manipulation of joints

bullet point Cranial osteopathy, to rebalance  the internal tissues of your body, using subtle touch

bullet point Therapeutic exercise

bullet point Postural and ergonomic advice

The number of treatments you will need depends on many things including the duration and severity of your problem, your general health and fitness, your age and your medical history.
